On June 16th, The Unicode Consortium, (a non-profit organization that sets the standards for the representation of text in all software) released 250 new emoji as part of the updated Unicode Standard 7.0.
These new emoji won’t be appearing on your smartphone just yet. We’ll have to wait to find out which ones will be adopted by companies like Apple, Google and Twitter – and see how each team of designers takes on the challenge.

Above are some of our favorite new emoji. For graphic designers, the pen and pencil are welcome additions. “Reversed hand with middle finger extended” is probably the most long-awaited emoji, while “man in a business suit levitating” is one of the more puzzling choices.
Personally, we’re rooting for “Vulcan Salute”, but there’s still a lot a emoji we want to see in action – including these amazing ones from our own talented designers:
